Georgian women’s tennis team ended up participation in II Group of Euro-African Zone with triumph. Georgians won a right to play in I Group which happened for the first time since 2008.
Lali Zerekidze, head coach of Georgian tennis players, took three girls to Egypt – Anna Tatishvili (world No.85), Sofia Shapatava (No.267) and Sofia Kvatsabaia (No.377). Though, this trio reach goal without any problems.
Georgian team defeated Norway (3:0), Latvia (2:1) and Turkey (3:0). Semifinal match of the tournament turned out decisive. Georgians beat second-placed of Group A Montenegro 3:0.
Sofia Shapatava won Vladica Babic over 6:2, 6:3. In the second match, Tatishvili beat Danka Kovinic (No.358) 6:2, 6:2. In doubles draw, Shapatava and Kvatsabaia defeated Babic and Milica Sliukic 6:3, 6:4.
In the second semifinal Turkey beat South Africa 3:0 and moved to I Group of Euro-African Zone with Georgia. Georgia and Turkey substituted Estonia and Greece. Next year they will play against Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia, Israel, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Holland, Luxembourg and defeated two teams in play-offs of world Group II.
