It is a pity, only this phrase suits the defeat which had Georgian National Basketball Team with Belgium at the selective tournament of European Championship 2011. Belgium used all the mistakes made by Igor Kokoshov’s players well and won the game with a 10-point difference 74:64.
On the “Lotto Arena” of Antwerpen gathered only 3500 fans in spite of promising sold out. Among them were Georgian fans. Our compatriots came from the different towns of Belgium and neighboring countries and gave a strong support to the Georgian Team.
Unfortunately, our team did not make such result as Georgian fans wanted, while the beginning of the match did not threat lose.Georgians were winning 8:2 and getting points easily as if the competitor was on the court. It would be great to continue such way till the end, though host team activated soon and it was clear that we would have difficult fight a head, besides the winning of 1/4 with 23:19 points.
After a brief rest, play was of equal strength, at that time Georgian Team already had gap enough. Mood was quite optimistic. The captain of the team Zaza Pachulia was playing well, Sanikidze was very active in defense, Grin’s play also was satisfying. Was hope that Tsintsadze and Markoishvili would play well at last.
After a rest hosts was winning with 3-points difference (38:41) and from 3/4 match went worse for Georgians. Belgium Team used our mistakes well, filled the gaps and also was a head with 11 points. Before ending 3/4 ,2.14 earlier Belgians were winning with 54:43points, Georgian Team played perfectly and after Shermadini. Green,Markoishvili and Sanikidze’s throwing they draw 54:54.
In the last ten minutes Igor Kokoshov’s players had to have psychological advantage logically ,but before the final signal 5 minutes earlier Georgian Team was losing with 59:61 points, when Tsintsadze could not score inside shooting, answering the attack Begin did well and hosts attacked.3 –point shooting was not successful, Markoishvili also was shown two technical fouls. Our team lost the last quarter with 10:20points.
The reason of loosing was showed by statistic also. Quests could not score 21 times.(6-6 mistakes was made by Pachulia and Tsintsadze) and scored 3-point shooting 4times from 18 shoots. Referees also were for Belgians. In questionable episodes referees were for Belgians, they were fouling Georgian players often.Pachulia was fouled 4times and was not able to do his best.
In spite of everything, it was quite possible to win this match if our team would show such play as they did with Poland, in such case Belgium would be without chance. This match showed also that Kokoshov needs some time to create stable team which will be able to win A Division groups regularly. Everything will be solved right now, in August. We still hope that our players’ physical condition will be enough to win next competitor Portugal, which is evidently in weak condition. Portugal after loosing with Bulgaria, yesterday was defeated without any chance 64:86 in Poland. On August 11 they will come in Georgia as an out-sider.
