Volunteers

Many people do not know how much work volunteers do at European Championship. These people are behind camera but believe me, it would have been difficult to hold the championship without them.

You can see them everywhere – in media center, on stadium, in press conference hall. Before the match, while the match and after the match these people play a key role. For example, volunteers work for media center. If you need something on the stadium, you must apply them – they will solve your problem and bring you a bottle of cold water in press lounge. In short, you can meet them everywhere and they are always ready to help you. It is easy to recognize them. They wear blue of black T-shirts, short and caps of sponsor “Adidas”.

Those who do not know meaning of volunteer, I will explain that these are people who help organizer country of European Championship hold such tournament without gratis. As I found out, besides locals, volunteers came from other countries, for example, from the USA. They were chosen two years ago. English speakers, sociable, smiley young girls and boys were priority. The volunteers work in fan-zone too. Foreigners live in renovated hostel and have three meals a day. I mention volunteers because if Georgia-Azerbaijan wants to host European Championship, they must take this factor into consideration.

I cannot say how Cameroonian Milla impressed the hosts with his smile but it is fact that a student from Africa got among the volunteers. I talked to him in the press conference hall and later we found out that we knew Russian better than English. When I found out his name and origin, I mentioned Roger Milla, Samuel Eto’o and “lions”. Mila corrected: “Untamed lions”. He characterized Eto’o positively. According to Milla, Cameroonian forward of “Makhachkala” Anzhi does a lot of good things in Cameroon and outside it. Besides that, he established football academy. Also, he made water supply system in villages where there is no water. He also helps Gabon and Kenya. I wish Georgian football players also do such good things in their homeland.

When I asked him about living level in Cameroon, he answered: “There is normal life”. He added that doctors and engineers have higher salary than in Ukraine. According to Milla, if in Ukraine doctors and engineers earn 200-300 USD a month, they earn 10 times higher salary in his homeland. I can hardly believe it but it is difficult to check this information.

The volunteers speak English in Kharkiv but when you answer in Russian and say that you are from Georgia, they easily communicate with you. They give away different colors of special cards in the press lounge while the match. For example, if you have problem with internet, you will raise the card and the volunteer will come up to you to solve the problem. I talked to one boy in Russian and he was interested in my origin. When he found out that I was from Georgia, he was very happy. He wrote down website of “World Sport” and promised me to check it out. He told that he visited “City of love” (I reminded him name – Sighnaghi) and like it very much. He said: “I ate so my Khachapuris…” though, he was disappointed that while returning to Ukraine, he was not allowed to take Georgian wine. Dmitro had 5 liters Kakhuri wine. At the airport he was told to drink it or just to leave it there. Only 4 liters alcohol drink is allowed to be taken. Dmitro was really disappointed and I felt sorry for him.
