For going though the play of European Championship 2011 was enough to beat Armenian Team 1:0. It is known that 4 best second place winners went though the play off. Several days ago we wrote down that we had little chance of it and Otar Gabelia’s team was depended on others. Those four teams are the following: Spain, England, Belarus and Iceland. Georgian team took the third place in the group. Artak Dashyan and Valter Pogosyan scored in the extra time. In case of drew Georgia would take the 2nd place.
As for goals: after Georgians’ chaos attack, Armenians contra-attacked and Dashyan scored in a long distance. In one minute Pogosyan used hopeless situation of hosts and scored with left leg. This one minute disappeared Georgians’ advance during whole match. Armenians after defeat in Yerevan made quite well revenge.
Gabelia’s man staff was the same as it was three days ago in Turkey. Game started in fast rhythm, but Armenians were very carefully and playing quite well in defense. First dangerous moment was at the 20th minute when Irakli Klimiashvili assisted to Ivanishvili and he faced to goalkeeper. Unfortunately he kicked very easy way and goalkeeper parried ball out easily. At the end of the first half Ivanishvili again had chance of scoring from the penalty area, but this time defenders saved situation. Armenians attacked Kvaskhadze’s goal only once. Zaved Badoyan kicked from the long distance but goalkeeper parried it out for corner kick. Gabelia’s team was playing quite well, Tornike Okriashvili was distinguished. In spite of lost, Okriashvili was the best player in both team, Armenians could stop him only with penalties. In fact Tornike was aggravating all attack. If he were as best in scoring as in owning of ball, would be better. He had chance to kick himself but let ball to others.
Georgians advantage was noticeable especially in the second half. After Okriashvili’s dribbling Revaz Barabadze kicked from 12-13 meter but with wrong direction. Soon Okriashvili- Klimiashvili’s combination, Barabadze kicked again, but without result. Again Okriashvili!... he was attacking from penalty area, scoring was inevitable, but defenders played well. At the 73rd minute Tornike kicked with wrong direction.
Time was flying, Georgians were worrying much more and their attacks were not such thoughtful as it were before. Gabelia made changes, but it also did not justify hopes. Giorgi Chedia played from the right wing dangerously twice, but he was late to kick to goal’s direction first time and the second time he preferred to assist than to kick. Armenians scored two goals in extra time and gathered 3 points. As for moments…. If scoreboard counted moments, football would be logic kid of sport.
It is difficult to talk about any positive after this match, meanwhile U-21 was winning during months. It is disappointed moment.
In spite of everything, we have to consider the third place in group as a very positive result. Last time Georgian U-21 had chance to go through the play off of European Championship in 1997, when Vladimer Gutsaev was head coach of Georgian U-21 team.
