Courmayeur, the city of Italy, hosts European Senior Chess Championship where more than 100 chess players participate. Two Georgian chess players Nona Gaprindashvili, 5-time world champion, and Tamar Khmiadashvili, winner of World and European Championships, are competing in the tournament.
Before the mentioned tournament, participants competed in rapid chess which lasted 2 days. Belarusian Galina Strutinskaya and Nona Gaprindashvili shared the 1st-2nd places with 5,5-5,5 points. Nona won silver medal and Strutinskaya took the 1st place. Elena Fatalibekova collected 4,5 points and took the 3rd place. As for Khmiadashvili, she took the 19th place.
Viktor Kupreichik (Belarus), Nikolai Mishuchkov (Russia) and Miso Cebado (Croatia) shared the 1st-3rd places with 6,5-6,5 points.
Today, veteran chess players started fighting for European Championship. 9 rounds will be held at the tournament and it will end up on April 14. Prize money of the tournament is 10350 EUR.
