Giorgi Mesablishvili member of Georgian national judo team gained bronze medal. Georgian judoka won four matches from five at World Junior Championship, which is underway in the capital of South Africa, Cape Town. He started competition from the second circle and won over Canadian Mehdy Zegir in 58 kg weight category. In 1/8 final he won over Japanese Riozhi Izutan. In this following match Mesablishvili managed to win because he was physically better prepared. Generally, it must be mentioned that Gugava’s team is quite well prepared.
In quarter final Mesablishvili won over Belgian Gerth Maes, who managed to defeat the current European champion Armenian Garik Arutinyan. Georgian judoka lost chance of winning gold or silver medal in semi-final of the tournament. He could not manage to beat Russian Sakhavat Gajiev, in repechage he won over another Russian judoka – Ivan Zverev.
Unfortunately, Leri Chelidze silver medal owner at World championship stopped competition in the first stage in this weight category. After ballot, we were reporting about possible quarter final between him and Belgian Adrian Querinmon, which would be repeating semi-final of European championship, but none of them managed to go through quarter final at World Championship. Georgian judoka lost the first match with American Natan Cearny.
In 60 kg weight category there was found out that Georgian would not win prize money in morning’s program. Vaja Margvelashvili and Lasha Giunashvili managed to overcome only one page. Margvelashvili won over Argentine Juan Vitaly, but lost the second match with South African Baul Antan. As for Lasha Giunashvili, he lost with Japanese Naohisha Takato, before it he managed to defeat Ukrainian Andrey Kushkov.
Tomorrow, champions and prize winners will be found out in two weight categories – 66kg and 73 kg. Lasha Davdatuashvili (66 kg) current European champion, Mikheil Chokheli and Phridon Gigani (both of them 73 kg) bronze medal winners at European championship will represent Georgian national youth judo team at World Junior championships.
