Traditional New Year’s referendum of Association of Georgian Sport Journalists was published too late. Since 1964 Georgian journalists name the best sportsman and team of year and award them before New Year. This time this referendum was delayed due to financial crisis several times and finally it was failed.
39 reps of Georgian media found out 10 best sportsmen and the best team of 2010. Competitors were 36 sportsmen of 17 kinds of sport. Davit Zirakishvili member of Georgian National Rugby Team and French “Clermont” gained the most votes – 284 points. He successfully played with his national team and became champion of France with his club. He was invited in World’s team. Viktor Sanikidze one of the leaders of Georgian National Basketball Team and Italian “Virtus” took the second place with 257 points. He played big role in success of Georgian National Team at qualifying round of European Championship. Giorgi Gogshelidze free style wrestler, who won silver medal at 2010 European Championship and bronze medal at World Championship gained 248 votes and took the third place.
Varlam Liparteliani (Judo), Levan Berianidze (Free Style Wrestling), Manuchar Markoishvili (Basketball), Ushangi Kuzanashvili (Sambo), Mamuka Gorgodze (Rugby), Baadur Jobava (Chess) were near top 10. Journalists named Georgian Basketball National Team, which went through final stage of European Championship as the best team of the year. Georgian Rugby (finalist of World Cup 2011), Judo (European 2010 Champion) and Football National Team also were among the best teams.
