Maia Overtakes Leaders

 

A day-off at the 5th stage of FIDE Grand Prix worked well for a 5-time world champion Maia Chiburdanidze. Georgian chess player Maia Chiburdanidze defeated Chinese Yuhua Xu on the 32nd move in the 5th round of tournament in the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar. It was the second victory for Maia and with 3.0 points she is in the 5th place among 12 participants. Bulgarian Antoaneta Stefanova and Chinese Xue Zhao are leaders of the tournament.
Stefanova defeated one of the favourites Russian Tatiana Kosintseva in the 5th round. Leader Zhao Ki finished draw with Mongolian Batkhuan Munguntaal.
Chiburdanidze will play against Indian Humpy Koneru with black pieces in the 6th round. Koneru has the highest rating (2600) at Ulaanbaatar Grand Prix. Today Koneru played draw with Chen Zhu who plays in the name of Qatar and with 3.5 points shares the third and the fourth places with Chinese Yifan Hou.
According to the results of previous stages Nana Dzagnidze is leader of Grand Prix with 390 points. She has participated in 3 tournaments (Chiburdanidze has only 85 points). Hou also has 320 points in the results of 3 stages, Kosintseva collected 290 points in 2 tournaments. Hou as well as Kosintseva (she refused to play in the last stage) are playing last stage and have the last chance to overtake Dzagnidze. Nana has a chance to increase her points at the tournament in Chile.
All participants play 4 tournaments of Grand Prix and show 3 best results. Winner chess player of total points will win a right to participate at the World Championship in the last quarter of 2011.
August 8 is the day-off at Grand Prix and the last 11th round will be held on August 11. Prize of each tournament is 40 000 EUR. Points and money will be divided by places the following way:
I place: 120 + bonus 40 points, 6 500 EUR
II place: 110 points + bonus 20, 4 750
III place: 100 points + bonus 10, 4 000
IV place: 90 points 3 750
V place: 80 points, 3 500
VI place: 70 points, 3 250
VII place: 60 points, 3 000
VIII place: 50 points, 2 750
IX place: 40 points, 2 500
X place: 30 points, 2 250
XI place: 20 points, 2 000
XII place: 10 points, 1 750
The best 9 participants according to six rounds of Grand Prix will be rewarded the following way:
I place: 15 000 EUR
II place: 10 000
III place: 8 000
IV place: 7 000
V place: 6 000
VI place: 5 000
VII place: 4 000
VIII place: 3 000
IX place: 2 000
