According to the decision of International Rugby Board, Tbilisi will host qualifying round of U-20 Rugby Championship.
As the press-office of Rugby Union reports, tournament with the name of Junior Rugby World Trophy will be held in the capital of Georgia, on May 24 to June 5 at “Shevardeni” and “Avchala” stadiums. The winner of Junior Rugby World Trophy 2011, will win right of competing at World Youth Championship 2012.
Georgia hosts such high level rugby tournament first time. The leadership of IRB supported Tbilisi candidate after visiting Tbilisi. As it is known Bernard Lapasset (IRB Chairman) and Jean-claude Baqué (FIRA-AER Chairman) Mark Ygan a chairman of Development Department visited Tbilisi on November 18-19. They visited “Shevardeni” and “Avchala” stadium and after that Bernard Lapasset stated that Georgia is ready to host some international tournament. The up-coming plan could be holding Junior Rugby World Trophy.
After visiting of IRB’s leadership, the Minister of Sport officially confirmed with sending the letter that Georgian side will help financially to hold the tournament. As a result of help Georgian government and IRB, first time in Georgian Rugby history, Tbilisi hosts qualifying round of World Championship.
On December 14, Philip Burdarias director of Junior Rugby World Trophy arrives in Tbilisi. On December 15, he will officially declare Tbilisi as the host of this tournament at the press-conference in Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs. Besides him, Lado Vardzelashvili the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs and Giorgi Nijaradze the president of Georgian Rugby Union will attend this press-conference.
Georgian U-19 National Team gained right of competing at Junior Rugby World Trophy at European Championship which was held in Belgium. Georgian players won all the matches and in the final match they won over Russian National Team.
The participants of Junior Rugby World Trophy will be finalists of continent championships: European Champion Georgian National Team, Russian National Team (finalist of European Championship), Asian Champion Japan, finalists of North America - national teams of Canada and the U.S.A, South America – Uruguay, Africa – Zimbabwe and Samoa the last place winner in A group at last World Championship.
