Gia Natsvlishvili:"Nominate Bronze Winners as Sportsmen of Year is not Expedient"

Georgian National Olympic Committee held meeting at “Courtyard Marriot”, where was made annual summarize. 87 from 125 delegates attended the meeting. 6 items were on an agenda:

1. Work done in 2010 and Olympic teams preparation for London (England)  XXX Olympic Games in 2012.
2. Affirmation of new regulations of GNOC.
3. European Youth Olympic Festival – “Tbilisi -2015”
4. Changes of GNOC’s members.
5. Audit report of GNOC’s finance activities in 2010.
6.  Several tasks
Ramaz Goglidze vice-president of GNOC leads the meeting.
Gia Natsvlishvili president of GNOC was the first who gave a speech. He started talking about “Tbilisi-2015”: I remind you that Brno (Czech Republic) was opponent of Tbilisi in fight for hosting Youth Olympic Festival 2015. Olympic festival -2015 will be difficult process. According to experts our chance was 10% but in spite of this we managed and won. All big countries (Italy England, France) were supporting us. Finally we won 26:21. It is big advantages and even one voice is important.
We have to hold about the fourth-fifth of Big Olympiad. 4-5 thousands sportsmen of 9 kinds of sports will arrive in Tbilisi. Totally, we have to host 20 000 people in one week. According to this the first sphere where Georgia was welcomed in European Union is sport. Hosting “Tbilisi-2015” will be difficult, but all together can solve any kind of problem”.

After that he talked what was done in these 2 years, he talked about Georgian sportsmen also, it must be said that very critically:” After my appointment GNOC changed its address and now it is located in bigger and more comfortable building in Dolidze street. It is noteworthy that government sold it to GNOC with symbolic prize 1 GEL.
We gave scholarship to 70 prospective sportmen. We did refurbishment works in swimming pool located in Cholokashvili street; we wanted to make PR of Georgian wrestling and due to it we held several tournaments, but we could not reached a goal yet. We built Olympic centre in Dusheti; We had quite well results in some kinds of sport (basketball, football, rugby) but we cannot say the same about wrestling, judo where success was more common for Georgians.

That’s why GNOC will not nominate the best sportsman of year. I decided so because, we do not have champions and nominate bronze winners as the best sportsman is not expedient. I mean Olympic sports, because out aim is to compete well as Olympic games.
London 2012 Summer Olympiad is coming. It is possible to gain more license than we had at Beijing Olympiad in 2008, but I do not hope winning medals. Champions of Beijing Olympiad are passive (Manuchat Kvirkvelia, Irakli Tsirekidze, Reavz Mindorashvili) and what they plan for London I do not know.

We succeeded at basketball and football, but getting Olympic license in these categories is excluded. I am sure that we will have reps in water polo and in rugby at Brazilian Olympiad in 2016, but not now.
There are not favorites but hope in spite of these we will get all licenses in judo. We plan to get 4-4 licenses in archery and in boxing. Archeries are doing quite well their job. As for boxers, it is too much complicated because it is not known yet who is professional and who is not. I do not know what is happening between leaders- Zhvania and Pkhakadze. We could not keep heavyweights Arsen Kasabiev and Albert Kuzilov. Kasabiev became citizen of Poland and Kuzilov is disqualified due to doping.  In spite of this we have chance to take 3 licenses.

Nino Salukvadze again represents Georgia in shooting and she is also considered as a candidate of medal.
Situation in gymnastics is difficult. Only batuti gymnasts are active: Golovina and Koshkadze.
Better situation is in tennis. We financed two very prospective sportsmen in this kind of sport ( Anna Tatishvili, Oksana Kalashnikova). Kalashnikova could not justify our hopes as for Tatishvili she can fight for license.
There are positive changes in volley-ball, taekvando, fencing, baseball and grass hockey. There is bad situation in athletic, pentathlon, rowing, horse-riding and badminton. GNOC will help those none Olympic kinds of sports: chess, Georgian wrestling and Sambo.

Lado Vardzelashvili Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs: “We have to spend money with care for making modern sport medicine centre in Tbilisi, which will justify all kinds of problems. We examined and analyzed 50 sportsmen and found out that their physical readiness is zero and it made us fasten creation of such centre.

Sportsmen were not in good conditions and it was difficult to demand results. When you are making all kind of conditions, results are demanded. Gaining license is important, but without golden medal everything will be vain. Unfortunately, we lack of qualified staff and maybe we will invite some foreign specialist in some kinds of sport. And finally: all of us have to play our role in well hosting of Olympic Festival –“Tbilisi-2015”.

Giorgi Asanidze (chairman of sport committee in parliament) : “I am sure that 2011 will be better than 2010 for Georgian sport. It is true that heavyweight federation lost two sportsmen (Kasabaev, Kuzilov), but after two-year pause Vano Grikurov very famous and master specialist of heavyweight is coming back from Poland. We have to pay attention individual training of sportsman. We have three licenses in heavyweight and we have to keep it”.

Gigi Ugulava (head of Tbilisi): “Sport is luxury of strong countries. We have many problems but in spite of this we do not leave sport without attention. I also played my role in holding Olympic festival in Tbilisi in 2015. we have to prepare not only sport infrastructure for that tournament, we have to prepare roads, airports. It is prestige to leave some medals in Tbilisi”.

At the end of the meeting they kept minute silence for remembrance all Georgian sportsmen who died during these two years (Shota Chochishvili, levan Intskirveli, Dito Shanidze, Nodar Kumaritashvili..).

Finally there were said about new members of executive committee of GNOC: Petre Tsiskarishvili (president of Boxing federation(, Giorgi Ramishvili (president of Winter Sport federation), Givi Onashvili (veteran judoka) and future president of judo federation who will be elected in place of Dilar Khabuliani former president of federation..
