Two rounds before the end of World Senior Championship, Georgian hegemony has established at women’s tournament: Nino Melashvili (2106) is in the first place. Nona Gaprindashvili (2360) is behind her.
Georgians have 6.5-6.5 points and have better additional data than their opponents – Galina Strutinskaya (Russia, 2277) and Ludmila Saunina (Russia, 2274). Tamar Khmiadashvili (2166), another Georgian participant of the tournament, has 5.5 points and is in the sixth place.
In the tenth round, Gaprindashvili will play against Elena Fatalibekova of Russia (2285) with black pieces. Melashvili and Khmiadashvili will play with white pieces. Melashvili will play against Natalia Titorenko of Russia (2143) and Khmiadashvili – against Sathe Thipsay of India (2152).
15 000 EUR is prize money of World Senior Championship which is underway in the city of Croatia, Opatija. 12 000 EUR is for men’s tournament and 3 000 EUR for women’s tournament. If man winner gets 2 100 EUR, woman winner has to be satisfied with 800 EUR.
