Georgia Goes to Celje and Starts with Poland

 

Georgian national basketball team got in Group C at the final stage of EuroBasket 2013. Spain, Slovenia, Croatia, Poland and Czech Republic will be the opponents of Georgia. The Georgians will hold the first game against Poland on September 4.

The ballot was held in Postojna Cave. About 600 guests were invited to the ceremony. Mayors of host cities, ambassadors and representatives of the participant countries, representatives of FIBA and FIBA-Europe and also about 150 representatives of Slovenian and foreign media were among the guests.

Besik Liparteliani, president of Georgian Basketball Federation, and Merab Ratishvili, general secretary and commissar of FIBA-Europe, attended the ceremony from Georgia.

Former and current basketball players – Jaka Daneu, Slavko Duscak, Roman Horvat, Goran Jagodnik, Saso Ozbolt and Samo Udrih played basketball in the cave. Official ambassadors of Slovenian EuroBasket – Ivo Daneu, Raso Nesterovic and Peter Vilfan were on special stage. Legendary basketball player Aljosa Zorga, Ukrainian Alexander Volkov, Spanish Jorge Garbajosa and Turkish Ibrahim Kutluay led the ballot.

The ballot lasted one hour and it brought very interesting groups. Of course, our fans are interested in Group C which will be hosted by one of the most ancient cities of Slovenia, Celje.

From the first pot the Georgian team got current European champion Spain, from the second – host Slovenia, from the third – Croatia, from the fourth – Poland, from the sixth – Czech Republic. It is known that the Georgian basketball players will hold the first game against Poland on September 4. Croatia will be their opponent on September 5, Slovenia – on September 7, Czech Republic – on September 8 and Spain – on September 9.

EuroBasket 2013 will be held in four cities (Ljubljana, Koper, Jesenice and Celje) of Slovenia on September 4-22. According to the regulations, 24 teams are distributed to four 6-team groups. Top 3 will go through to the second group stage. In the second round 12 teams will be in two six-team groups. Top 6 will make through to ¼ final.
