Lasha Gamkrelidze, point guard of Georgian basketball team, changed the team last week - he transfered from German “Mitteldeutscher” to "Giessen". Yesterday he held the first match in a new team and his debut turned out quite successful.
"Giessen" hosted "Telekom" in the first round of Bundesliga. "Giesse" took the 14th place at last German Championship (10 win, 24 lost). Its yesterday's opponent took the 4th place (24 win, 10 lost). So, "Telekom" was considered as a favorite of the match.
The guests started playing well but everything changed from the second period. After losing with a 11-point difference (15:26), players of "Giessen" won the second quarter 21:8 and had a 2-point handicap (36:34) before the break. Both teams played equally in last two periods but the hosts won the match - 75:70.
Lasha Gamkrelidze played a great role in success of "Giessen". Georgian point guard was in the main staff and scored 12 points, 2 steals and one rebound-assist within 29,22 minutes. It is worth mentioning, that Gamkrelidze scored 3 points, then scored one 2-point and penalty. Perhaps, he could have scored more but after 5 personal fouls he had to stop playing.
Unlike Gamkrelidze, Giorgi Shermadini still plays for "Panathinaikos". Team of Georgian player is in Moscow now where they are participating in "Gomelsky Cup". On the first day of the tournament, "Panathinaikos" held a match against "Pao Zhalgiris" and lost 70:76. Shermadini was in the main staff. He scored 4 points, 3 rebounds within 16,19 minutes. Georgian player made quite many, 5 mistakes.
Today, "Partizan" of Belgrade will be opponent of "Panathinaikos" in the match for the 3rd place. "Zhalgiris" will play against TSKA in final.
Teams of naturalized Georgian players played in the first round of Spanish Championship. "Joventut" of Quinton Hosley lost against "Cajasol" 80:85. Hosley who has not held one official match in Georgian team yet, scored 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
"Estudiantes" of Tyrone Ellis lost against "Real" Madrid - 79:84. Ellis managed to score only one point and 2 assists.
