Georgian national team ended competition at Abu Dab Grand Prix with 2 medals and as a result took the sixth place. Today Zviad Gogogchuri (90kg) added bronze medal to Amiran Papinashvili’s (60kg) silver medal gained the day before yesterday.
There were representatives from 23 countries at this tournament. As it was expected, wrestlers who participated at Olympic Championships did not arrive in Abu Dab. Georgia team also went to tatami with a new staff. according to the preliminary agenda, 5 judokas had to represent Georgia, but Varlam Liparteliani even did not wrestle once. According to the information of Georgian judo federation, Liparteliani was in Germany and participation at this tournament was decided but he could not arrive in Abu Dab.
The current champion of Europe had to wrestle in 100 kg weight category. Zviad Gogochuri wrestled in 90 kg weight category and after two easy victories, he went through the semi-final and guaranteed place in top 3. He beat Portuguese Rikardu Luru in 38 minutes and Canadian Giyom Peru in 24 minutes. He finished the match against Russian Kyril Voprosov soon with awarding ippon by Russian sportsman.
Champions of Grand Prix gains 200 points, the second place winner 120 points and bronze medal winners 80. Loser judokas at the start stage also gain some points.
