Consolation Bronze Medal

 

If Georgian judo team had wrestled on the last day of World Individual Championship like the previous days, the team of Peter Seisenbacher would have been among those 107 countries which ended up the championship without a point. One medal and one 7th place advanced Georgian team and took the 15th place.

Individual Championship ended up with men 100 and +100 kg and women +78 kg. The following judokas wrestled in the name of Georgia: Irakli Tsirekidze, Levan Zhorzholiani (100 kg), Adam Okruashvili and Zviad Khanjaliashvili (+100 kg). The most titled member of the team won bronze medal in Paris. He won over Brazilian Luciano Correa, Iranian Javad Mahjoub and Japanese Takamasa Anai. In ¼ final, Tsirekidze lost against Belgian Elco Van Der Geest. After that, Irakli competed in repechage where he beat Russian Sergey Samoylovich and Egyptian Ramadan Darwish.

Exactly Darwish beat Levan Zhorzholiani in the main draw.

Before ¼ final, Zhorzholiani beat three opponents. He won over Lithuanian Marius Labalaukis by ippon, Dutch Henk Grol by waza-ari and Bosnian Amel Mekic. Unfortunately, in repechage Zhorzholiani lost against the first opponent Czech Lukas Krpalek by two yukos and took the 7th place.

Heavyweight Georgians started competition with victories. Okruashvili beat Filipino Tomohiko Hoshina. Zviad Khanjaliashvili won over South Korean Soo-Whan Kim. This victory turned out the only one for Khanjaliashvili at World Championship. In the second round, he lost against Polish Grzegorz Eitel.

Okruashvili managed to overcome the second round. He beat Kyrgyz Iurii Krakovetskii but lost against South Korean Sung-Min Kim by yuko in 1/8 final.

The team championship will be held on the last day of the tournament On August 28. 16 teams will compete in it. Georgia will wrestle against Germany. In case of victory, Georgians will wrestle against winner between South Korea and USA. In case of success, the team of Peter Seisenbacher will wrestle against one of these four teams: Brazil, Uzbekistan, Algeria and China. Stronger teams: Japan, France, Russia and Mongolia are on the second side of the draw.
