Boris Pirtskheliani:"Politics Came to Sport Itself"

In last September “World Sport” offered you the interview with Boris Pirtskhaliani chairman of Georgian national judo youth team. The specialist, whose team always used to come with a lot of medals from European and World championships, after 6-year successful work, in 2009 year, was fired due to membership of Shota Khabareli’s team. After that he even did not have salary of ordinary coach. After last year’s interview, our respondent was responded from judo federation and was employed in national team. After one year work we has again connected to him. There was a lot to talk about.
-Last year in autumn I was offered to work as one of the coaches for national team. I received this offer, I did not agree with Piter Seisenbacher’s (chairman of the team) view but in spite of this started working. Actually, I worked in the gym from October to December. Then the team was at international meetings most time and I used to train candidates who used to stay in Tbilisi, I was training No.2, No3 seed candidates.
- Of the reasons that you accept this offer was that some of judokas needed your help. Betkil Shukvani was among them..
- I had been in Svaneti before I accepted and during this time I used to contact to my sportsmen with mobile and used to give some advice. Among them was Betkil Shukvani. When I made such decision and arrived in Tbilisi, Betkili was sick and was to have treatment. This terrible trauma was caused to due to thoughtless trainings which were not normal. Other sportsmen also had such problem. A doctor told him that he would be able to renovated trainings from January. It meant that he would not time for gaining license for Olympic Games. I talked to the doctor and explained and finally we received optimal decision: in November we started special trainings, which would not complicate the trauma. In January, Betkili was in a perfect physical condition and held 14 matches at Germand Grand Prix, he won 13 of these matches with ippon. He lost the 14th one due to trauma. As result chairman of the team liked him.
- Was he in optimal condition before Olympic Games?
- I can say with whole my responsibilities that he was prepared perfectly. He was in a perfect physical condition, as for techin, he used to be good at it always. He was the best at it in the world. Before going to the last meeting before Olympic Games, I assured at the training that he would win the highest prize in London.
- And why did not you accompany the team in Borjomi?
- I was not in the list. Then I realized that I would not go to London Olympic Games too. I was told that it was Seisenbacher’s decision. But it used to blame him too much. When I have some questions with federation, I used to be told that it was Seisenbacher’s decisions, but most time it was not true.
- Several veterans and other important people in judo were taken to London after financing of the government. Did not you have chance of being among them?
- Unfortunately I did not. If I were in London I would not let such terrible things to happen.
- Do you mean Shukvani’s scandal?
- First of all his strange failure. I have never seen such “damage” of judo, what was done with Shukvani whilst wrestling against French sportsman. The match which had to be stopped three times and announce Betkil as a winner was lasted until Shukvani did not lose.
- No matter how unfair he was treated, his mistake was the reason of his failure- 5 seconds before final siren he was laying on the shoulders.
- I told the same to him when he returned from London. He responded me that he was in such condition at that time that did not remember anything. Maybe I was looking at board but it does not mean that I was able to see anything, I lost reality and I was absolutely disunited. I watched to record and I assured that due to unfair decisions of the referees during the time, he really was destroyed. Minimum due to penalties of his opponent he could award from wazari, but French sportsman was not given any penalties. Once Shukvani’s wazari was called yoko, half minute before ending the match, ippon was annulled. When Shukvani was given penalty he had already been destroyed and could not control movement of the opponent as well as left time. It is impossible that it was just unfair umpiring. It was terrible dirtiness what had been booked in advance, but I do not want to talk about it.
- Have you talked with the authorities of federation about this match?
- Everyone who knows something in judo, even elementary rules of it can come and watch this video with me and they will be assured in it with 100 %. It will be good if judo specialist will gather and finally we will make some decision. Unfair umpiring about Khinchagashvili and Gegeshidze was protested, whilst there were only several episodes, but there are a lot of moments in case of Shukvani.
-  What about sportsman’s political decision?
- I was not informed about it. He and Ambako Avaliani, whose coach I am, did it without saying anything. I got angry and told that they had to say about it or minimum ask some advice. Avaliani told me that if they asked for advice I would not let them. For nine years they have been fighting against me. My brother is undesirable person for this government, I had a lot of problems, but I solved most of them, I have never thought about joining politics in spite of this. When sportsman joins politics, naturally sports is finished for him. But lets look at it from another view, maybe it is on the contrary, politics came to sport…
- How would you estimate competition of our team at London Olympics?
- Negatively. We won gold medal, but in spite of this, total result was terrible. I have talked about Shukvani a lot. I will say in a short way about other members of the team too.  No one expected such success from Shvadatuashvili. He has a very hard-working guy  and he really deserved this victory. It is pleasant that he wrestled in Georgian style. Nugzar Tatalashvili also did his best, but he was not lucky in draw. Avtandil Chrikashvili is character’s wrestler and it was evident that he did not meet Olympic Games relatively.  That’s why he could not manage to show his possibilities. The same can be said about Varlam Liparteliani. I know Varlam very well and after his first appearance at once I guessed that he did not feel well. He is sportsman who does not need to encourage to wrestle, in the contrary he needs to be calmed down. But this time everything happened in the contrary. In case of correct method of communication with him, it was quite possible to create necessary mood for him. I am really sorry that I did not have chance of it. Lomer Zhorzholiani also could quite more. As for Adam Okruashvili, he was mot lucky in draw. Our team had had more chances of success, if it would have had individual coaches during the matches. Russians reaches such success based on it. I did not see their Italian chairman even once during the matches.
- Olympics finished and new haste starts in Georgian judo. Team is without chairman and special presidential elections are to be held in federation….
- Georgian sport is ruled according to politics. Unfortunately, our federation is not exclusion. If new federation also be staffed according to political view, then I will say good-bye to everyone and will stop working in my favorite sport. I do not have desire to stay in such environment.
