1939. Vladimir Ugrekhelidze, forward of "Dinamo" Tbilisi and the Soviet national basketball team, was born. In 1962 he won Champions Cup with "Dinamo". He was European champion in 1961, won Olympic silver medal in 1960, the Soviet champion (1960) and winner of the Cup (1969), won bronze medal at World Championship (1963). Vladimir Ugrekhelidze died in February 2009.

1886. Kar and Samuel Nile won the championship of the USA Tennis Association. Later this tournament changed its name - the US Open tennis championship.
1902. FC "Grazer Ak" (Grazer Athletik-Sport Klub) was formed in the city of Austria, Graz. "Grazer Ak" won Austrian Championship, 3 Austrian Cups and 2 Supercups. In 1982 the club held a 2-round match with "Dinamo" Tbilisi in 1/16 final of Cup Winners' Cup tournament. "Dinamo" easily defeated Austrian club (2:0, 2:2).
1923. Helen Mud defeated Mola Melor (6:2, 6:1) in the final of the 37th US Women's Open Championship.
1934. Helen Jacobs defeated Sarah Kook (6:1, 6:4) in the final of the 48th US Women's Open Championship.
1958. Floyd Patterson, super heavyweight boxer, defeated Roy Harris in the 13th round by knockout and became world champion.
1964. South Africa was expelled from the Olympic Movement because of apartheid.

 

1973. "Dinamo" Tbilisi played draw 0:0 with "Atletico" Madrid in semifinal of "Caravela Trophy" in the city of Spain, Huelva. Georgians won the match 4:2 by penalty shootout. Davit Gogia, goalkeeper of "Dinamo", parried two penalty kicks taken by Spanish players. "Dinamo": Gogia, Dzodzuashvili, Kanteladze, Chelidze, Khinchagashvili, M. Machaidze, Ebralidze, Asatiani, Gutsaev, Kipiani (Mchedlishvili), Levan Nodia (Tsereteli). Aleksandre Kotrikadze was a team coach.
1983. Samantha Drus was the youngest swimmer who swam across La Manche. Drus was 12 years and 119 days old.
1987. 4 women swimmers from German Democratic Republic made World Record for swimming 200 meters (7:55,47).
1993. "Dinamo" Tbilisi played the first match in history of independent Georgian football on the Boris Paichadze National Stadium. "Dinamo" defeated "Linfield" Belfast of Northern Ireland (2:1) in the qualifying match of Champions League. Shota Arveladze and Gela Inalishvili scored goals from Georgian players. "Dinamo": Zoidze, Nemsadze, Lobjanidze, Shelia, Inalishvili, Kavelashvili (Anchabadze), A. Arveladze, Jamarauli, R. Arveladze, Kinkladze, Sh. Arveladze. Givi Nodia was a team coach.
1997. FIFA and Russian football teams held a match on the "Luzhniki" stadium to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Russian football. "World Team" won this game 2:0. Youri Djorkaeff and Julen Guerrero scored goals. Akhrik Tsveiba, former player of "Dinamo" Tbilisi, played for FIFA team. English specialist Bobby Robson was a team coach.

2004. Judoka Zurab Zviadauri won gold medal in a 90-weight class at Athens Olympic Games. He is the first sportsman in history of independent Georgia who won at Olympic Games.
2006. American swimmer Michael Phelps improved world record to swim 200 m with butterfly stroke. He swam the mentioned distance within 1:53,8 minutes and improved his result (1:53,93). Phelps gained old result at World Championship in Barcelona 2003.
2007. Fabinho, forward of Brazilian U17 team, scored "the fastest" goal in history of the matches held by FIFA. At World Championship (held in South Korea) he scored goal in goalposts of New Zealand at the 9th second of the match. Before this, Turkish Hakan Shukur had scored the fastest goal. At World Championship 2002 he scored goal in the match with South Korea at the 11th second.
2008. Russian Yelena Isinbayeva became champion in pole vaulting at Olympic Games in Beijing. Also she made a world recond (505 m).
2008. Spanish Rafael Nadal won tennis tournament at Olympic Games in Beijing.
2008. Geor-Gia, beach volleyball players, who competed at Beijing Olympic Games in the name of Georgia went through semifinal.
2009. A 37-year old German Steffi Nerius won in javelin throw at World Championships in Athletics which took place in Berlin. She was the oldest winner among athletes at World Championship.

1933. Just Fontaine, forward of French national football team, prize-winner of World Championship. In 1958 he scored 13 goals at Swedish Championship. It still remains record (from 1930 till today) in the history of the tournament. He played 21 matches and scored 30 goals in French team. He played in "Casablanca" Morocco (1950-53), French "Nice" (1953-56) and "Reims" (1956-62). Just was French champion in 1956, 1958, 1960 and 1962. He won Coupe de France in 1954 and 1958. Fontaine became the best shooter of the French Championship in 1958 ad 1960. Also he was coach of French team (1967), PSJ (1973-76), "Toulouse" (1978-79), Moroccan team (1979-81).

1943. Gianni Rivera. In 1959 at the age of 15 he made his debut in Seria A for Alessandria. After one year, at the age of 16 he was bought by AC Milan with a record transfer fee 200 000 USD. In 1962 he played his first match for the "Squadra Azzurra" against team of German Federal Republic. In 1962 he won scudetto and Champions Cup - in 1963. In 1968 he won Cup Winners' Cup. Gianni became European champion in 1968. Rivera won 10 Italian Championships. He was named as the best European player in 1969 and the best Italian player in 1965. He competed in 4 World Championships (1962, 1966, 1970, 1974). Also he is the finalist of World Cup in 1970. Rivera played 501 matches for "Milan" and scored 122 goals.
1943. Roberto Rosato. He was defender of Italian team in 1960-1970, European champion in 1968, finalist of championship 1970, participant of World Championship 1966. Roberto played 37 matches for Italian team. Also he played in "Torino" (1960-66), "Milan" (1966-73), "Genoa" (1973-77). While playing in "Milan" he won 2 Cup Winners' Cups, Intercontinental Cup, became Italian champion and is a 3-time winner of Coppa Italia.

1950. Premysl Bicovsky, forward of Czechoslovakian football team in 1970-80, European champion in 1976, champion of Olympic Games in 1980, participant of World Championship in 1982. He played 45 matches and scored 11 goals for Czechoslovakian team. In 1983 he became champion of Czechoslovakia. Premysl was named as the best player of Czechoslovakia in 1974.
1952. Ricardo Villa (Julio Ricardo "Ricky" Villa), midfielder of Argentinian team, "Racing", "Tottenham" (1978-83), world champion in 1978. He played 18 matches in Argentinian team and scored one goal. Ricardo won FA Cup in 1981 and 1982.
1966. Vladimir Gogoladze, Georgian gymnast. In 1988 he won at Olympic Games in Seoul. Also he is bronze prize-winner of European Championship in 1985. Vladimir won the Soviet Union Championship several times.
1972. Nate Jones, American boxer. In 1966 he won bronze medal in heavyweight class at Olympiad.
1976. Tim Malhow, American swimmer of 200 m butterfly and freestyle strokes. He won 2 silver medals at Olympiad in 1996.
1979. Alexander Mikhaylin, Russian judoka, world champion in 2001. He won European championship twice.
