Vladimir Weiss of Slovakia – for the first time in history of independent Georgia the coach with national team experience will head the Georgian team.
The executive committee of the Georgian Football Federation will be held tomorrow. The candidature of Weiss will be approved and the presentation of the Slovak coach is planned at 13:00.
Vladimir Weiss is 51 years old, was born in the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava on September 22, 1964. He was a good midfielder and played at the 1990 World Cup. Weiss has held 19 matches and scored 1 goal in the national team. He played for “Inter” Bratislava, “Sparta”, “Kosice”, “Dunajska Streda” and “Artmedia”. Vladimir finished career at the age of 36.
Weiss played for the Slovak national team in 1993-1995: 12 matches, 1 goal.
Weiss started coaching in “Artmedia” where he was an assistant for a season and then became a head coach for 6 seasons – in 1999-2006. This club became the best in Slovakia, won the country’s championship twice and reached the group stage of Champions League.
In the qualifying round “Artmedia” held a good match against “Celtic” – 5:0. At the group stage the club of Weiss took the third place but played draw with “Glasgow Rangers”. “Artmedia” defeated “Porto” 3:2 away and it was a sensation.
“Artmedia” beat “Wit Georgia” at UEFA Cup Qualification in 2006 but Weiss was already coaching “Saturn” of Russia. He spent a season there and had Georgian Gogita Gogua on the team. Then, he went back to “Artmedia” and the club became a champion of the country in 2008.
Weiss and the Slovak national team: successful 2010
In summer 2008 Weiss became a head coach of the Slovak national team. The Slovaks played at World Cup for the first time and took the first place in the qualifying round. They also played at the 2010 World Cup and made through to 1/8 final where they lost to future finalist Netherlands - 1:2.
At Euro 2012 Qualification the team of Weiss took the 4th place in the group.
Weiss was dismissed in 2011 and became a coach of “Slovan” Bratislava. He resigned in a year.
Achievements in “Kairat”
There was a 3-year period in “Kairat” of Kazakhstan in 2012-2015. Last November Weiss left “Kairat”. The sides did not extend contract. “Kairat” won the country’s Cup twice (2014, 2015).
“Kairat” achieved the best result at European tournaments under the leadership of Weiss.
“I left the club quietly. I wish everybody good luck. Now I am having a rest and waiting for offers” – stated Weiss last December.
The name of Weiss’ father was also Vladimir and he was a football player as well. He played for the Czechoslovakia national team.
His son’s name is also Vladimir and is a famous football player. The 26-year-old forward plays for “Al-Gharafa” of Qatari. In the Slovak national team he has scored 4 goals in 48 matches. The 19-year-old Vladimir Junior played for “Manchester City”. Then, he played for “Bolton”, “Glasgow Rangers”, “Espanyol”, “Pescara”, “Olympiacos” and “Lekhwiya”.
The Kazakhstan national team also wanted Weiss
The debut of Vladimir Weiss in the Georgian national team will be held against Kazakhstan on March 29. The Kazakhstan Football Federation was also discussing the candidature of Weiss for its national team.
Weiss arrived in Russia in December and stated: “My agent is looking for a team. There is an option of Russian club but also, I have an offer from the national team. Let us see what will happen”.
