10 Medals in a Day

The first day of “Golden Grand Prix” named after legendary Georgian wrestlers Givi Kartozia and Vakhtang Balavadze was successful for Georgian Greco-Roman and Free-Style Wrestling teams, they gained 3 gold, 1 silver and 6 bronze medals. Champions and prize winners found out in 5 weight categories yet and according to it Georgians’ results are quite good. But from 71 participants 44 were Georgians and that’s why these results are not very impressive.
Georgian teams participate in these tournaments without several leaders, guests also do not have the best staff, but more pitiful than that fact was empty tribunes. Organizers of “Golden Grand Prix” decided attendance to be free for attracting spectators but it also did not work well. During whole day only one a thousand fans gathered.
Champions and prize winners were found out in 55, 66 and 96 kg weight categories in Greco-Roman Style Wrestling. In these three weight categories champions and prize winners became Georgia and Iranian wrestlers. There were 7 Georgian wrestlers from 11 participants in 55 weight category. Lasha Gogitidze managed to go through semi-final after beating two Armenian wrestlers: Armen Chomaryan and Harutun Hovanesyan. In final match he won over Iranian Bager Tavakolian and became champion.
In 66 weight category (13 Georgian from 19 participants) final fight was held between Georgian and Iranian wrestlers, Omid Norozi won over Marad Abuladze. Before this fight Abuladze beat three compatriots – Ucha Shavadze, Lasha Lolashvili and Archil Turmanidze. As for Norozi, he won over Azerbaijani Babak Rahimli, Mukhran Machutadze and Giorgi Meskhi. Georgian wrestlers won bronze medals in this category. Olashvili won over Turmanidze and Machutadze beat Meskhi.
Irakli Kajaia (96 kg) offered the biggest supersize to spectators. 12 candidates of Georgian National Team were represented in this weight category, total number of participants was 17. Kajaia won over his cousin Iakob Kajaia, Aleko Burdiladze and Vasil Imerlishvili and went through final, where he gained impressive victory over Iranian Mahdi Aliar and became champion. Iakob Kajaia and Egyptian Muhamed Abdelpatah won bronze medals.
60 kg weight category was the only category where Georgian participant could not manage to go through final. Malkhaz Kurdiani had the most real chance, he lost with Turkish Chetan Ersan in semi-final. Kurdiani won over Malkhaz Zarkua before this match and as a result went through final. Zarkua and Kurdiani fought against each other in repechage. Zarkua won bronze medal. Azerbaijani Agahusein Mustafaev became champion.
