European Championship Is Over in Tbilisi, We Are Looking forward to World Championship!

European Weightlifting Championships is over at Tbilisi Sports Palace. On April 11-18 winners were revealed in 15 weight categories. The Georgian men’s team participated in the tournament with 8 athletes. Two of them managed to get in Top 3.

After 2-year disqualification Davit Gogia (105 kg) won bronze medal in the snatch. Irakli Turmanidze won silver medals.

“European Championship is over, we are looking forward to World Championship” – European Weightlifting Championships Tbilisi 2015 wrote on its official Facebook page. Tamas Ajan, president of International Weightlifting Federation, stated Georgia held the tournament at high level and has a chance to host World Championship. After the end of European Championship Levan Kipiani, minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, also stated it would be good if Georgia hosted World Championship.

Kakhi Kakhiashvili, acting president of the Georgian Weightlifting Federation and 3-time Olympic champion, has already confirmed Georgia is going to bid for the 2018 IWF Youth World Championships.

The Georgia weightlifting team will compete in World Championship which will take place in the USA on November 20-29. The Georgians will try to earn 3 licenses for the 2016 Olympic Games. Shota Mishveladze and Lasha Talakhadze will compete in World Championship and Raul Tsirekidze will recover from injury.

The official closing ceremony of European Championship was held at restaurant “Otium”. The delegates, European Championship Organizing Committee and honored guests attended the event.

Hasan Akkus, general secretary of European Weightlifting Federation, opened the ceremony. He thanked Kakhi Kakhiashvili and the whole Organizing Committee for the work they had done. Later Hasan Akkus awarded the best teams and athletes of the tournament.

The Ukraine women’s team took the first place. Russia and Turkey took the second-third places. The Moldova men’s team took the first place, Russia – the second and Poland – the third place.

Boyanka Kostova of Azerbaijan was named the best among the women and Aurimas Didzbalis of Lithuania was named the best among the men. Tatiana Kashirina of Russia was named the best weightlifter of European Championship.
